On the Adriatic and Ionian Initiative
Established in 2000 in Ancona, at the Summit on Development and Security, the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative is aimed at improving development and strengthening security in the Adriatic-Ionian area, intensifying cooperation among the countries in the region and providing incentives for countries in transition towards the integration process and approaching the European Union. The AII consists of nine member states: Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia and Greece.
The parliamentary framework of cooperation was established in 2001 and since then 15 conferences of Presidents/Speakers of Parliaments of the Adriatic and Ionian Initiative (AII) were held. Montenegro became a full member of the AII on 1 June 2007. During 2019, Montenegro is presiding the AII. The Adriatic-Ionian forum serves to the exchange of political opinions and, at the same time, it is a forum for achieving multilateral cooperation in several areas (transport, maritime affairs, tourism, education, protection of the environment and cultural heritage, development of small and medium-sized enterprises, fight against all forms of organised crime, rural development).
At the end of every conference, one of the following documents is adopted: a joint statement, declaration, proposals and recommendations, summing up the conclusions from the conference and providing guidelines for further activities.
